As we enter a new year 2012,any of us make new years resolutions.

2 Peter 1 outlines the certain truthfulness of the Christian work. His eye witness account shows a certainty of events that and an urgency

Pray that you will make 2012 a year of godly growth.

What is the cross?
- is it just the means God chose to save sinners?
- no, God chose the cross because it teaches something and provides a ’culture’

In Pauls day, boasting was common practise. Worldly boasting stemmed from outwouldly appearances. Clothes, CV, power of speech etc.  Paul responds to this by ‘boasting as a fool’ to demonstrate the difference between the culture of the cross and the culture of the world.

Culture of the Cross

- Gentleness not Arrogance
- Suffering and Humiliation (Paul’s body bore the marks of suffering)
- Weakness not Power (Paul came to Damascus thinking he was a hero and left in a basket, lowered from the wall). Knowledge of our weakness comes with Christian maturity. We are all broken and need to avoid the illusion of worldly power.

We are not called to be powerful, but rather God wants people who are fearful and weak, people who are despite suffering and weakness can put their trust and reliance on the cross!

Pray that you might continue to grasp the ‘cross culture’.

Corinth was a trading city influenced by promiscuous values. Paul previously been to Corinth and although the church was growing many in the church were struggling to shake off worldly influences. Paul wrote at least 4 letters to the Corinthians.

In 2 Corinthians, Paul wants the church in Corinth to know that despite hardship, his comfort comfort comes from God. When you understand the gospel, you understand that greatness doesnt come from your house, or car, but greatness comes from God’s willingness to use our brokenness to demonstrate his  power.

Pray for the cause of mission, such that the gospel might change hearts and minds.

The God’s Book, God’s Plan module is designed to give us an overview of what the Bible is, what it’s about and how it all fits together. The Bible is the unfolding story of God’s salvation in history for His glory, and it all points to Jesus. And in God’s Book, God’s Plan we look at how story of the Bible unfolds and how every bit of it is actually about Jesus. This helps people read and understand the Bible better, and lays the foundation for every other Digging Deeper course. We also look at things like how historically accurate is the Bible and how to read the Old Testament well.

The Living Word module is designed to answer the question: How is it that we can know Almighty God? Can we know Him through His creation? Can we know Him through reasoned thinking and philosophy? Can we know Him through our experiences and emotions? In this Digging Deeper module we will investigate how God reveals Himself to us and so how we can know Him truly, as He actually is, not as we imagine Him to be. This will have real applications for how we treat God’s Word and for how we think about people’s claims of ‘other’ ways to know God.

Our term 3 teaching series on Ephesians 4-6 entitled “New” begins this Sunday.

The Daily Reading Notes for our term 3 teaching series on Ephesians 4-6 entitled “New” are available this Sunday. Pick them up at church, in the entryway between the grandstands.

We are having our next conneXion lunch on Sunday the 5th July for anyone who has been coming along to EVchurch for a little while and would like to not only meet a bunch of other people but also meet the staff team and connect even more into in church life. One of our main goals at EVchurch is to help people connect deeply into this community of Christ with a sense of  belonging and purpose. The lunch will be held at the Green Point Community centre Koolang Road Green Point from 1.00pm to 3.30pm. Child minding is provided and all you need to bring is your own drinks. Lifesteps is a course that fast-tracks people through key steps on the path of the Christian life. It helps us to put key areas of the Christian life into practice, thinking through questions like:

How do I really put magnification into practice in my life?

How do I really live as a member of this church?

How can I really mature in my faith and relationship with God?

How can I really do ministry the way God intended?

How can I really be on mission to the world around me?

Lifesteps seeks to give practical answers to these questions. We’d love everyone who hasn’t done it to come along.

Lifesteps Starts 25th May and runs for four Monday nights from 7.45pm at Greenpoint Community Centre.

Digging Deeper is a great course running for four Wednesday nights starting 6^th May.

It’s a course to help us dig deeper into the Bible so we can grow as Christians to know and love and serve God better.

There’s two modules running at the same time, in the same place. They are:

1. God’s Book, God’s Plan – An intro to the Bible

God has one big plan that He has worked out in human history and recorded in the pages of His book, the Bible. God’s Book, God’s Plan is an overview of how the Bible fits together, showing how God’s plan of salvation works itself out through history, especially as it is fulfilled in Jesus.

2. The First Five – Genesis to Deuteronomy

The first five books of the Bible are the foundation that the rest of the Bible is built upon. The more we understand these the more we understand the whole Bible. The First Five is an in depth look at each of the first five books of the Bible, looking at what they are about, what they teach us about God, and how they fit into the overall story of the Bible.

Digging Deeper is for anyone who wants get into God’s Word in more depth, so that they might know Him better and love Him more. The course is for people of all levels of Christian understanding, designed for anyone who wants to Dig Deeper.

Digging Deeper is a course that runs three times a year with different modules. It runs for five weeks at a time and digs deeper into an area of theology. Starting May we have two modules which will be running at the same time on the same night in the same place:

Modules: God’s Book, God’s Plan   (Intro to the Bible)

The First Five   (Old Testament 1)

Location: Terrigal Surf Club

Time: 7.30-9.30pm

When: Five Wednesdays starting May 6^th
